World History - Standard 7 - The Great War
The 1900’s started a new era. During this century nations dealt with large economic failures and harsh wars. Technology and warfare changed greatly in this time period.  Many hopes were lost during the Wars. Man defeated discrimination but lost many in the process.
The 20th century was composed of many national alliances. Many countries, including Germany, had increase the military power greatly. Germany helped declare war when an important Arch-Duke in 1914 was assassinated. As alliances grew stronger and defeated their enemies, they would take over land. This process is called Imperialism. Germany had an increasingly advanced and larger army yet was defeated because of their lack of strategy.  The war ended with the treaty of Versailles in 1918. Germany was forced admit for the start of the war and pay for reparations of France and Great Britain.
After World War 1 the world seemed to be calm for a while. Yet there were powerful leaders rising.  Adolf Hitler became head of the Nazi party in the 1920’s. With Germany in a very vulnerable position, it was only time before someone took lead. Germany fell into great economic loss because of the war. Many Germans followed Hitler‘s reason that the economic loss was because of the Jews. Hitler became dictator of Germany in 1933. A few years before this time, there was a worldwide economic failure. This took citizens jobs, homes, and lives away. There were programs in the United States that helped give the people the chance to make a few dollars a day but the worldly problem didn’t officially end till about the start of World War II.
World War II started in 1918 when Germany invaded Poland. The Nazis discriminated the Jews horribly. Hitler set harsh laws on the Jews that restricted all of their rights and eventually made them be to concentration camps. After the United States President Roosevelt died, Vice President Truman took lead of the country. He decided to end the war as quick as possible. He ordered the two bombings, Little Boy and Fat man, on Japan.  This ended the war but killed over 140,000 people.
The 19th century was a time of war and disaster yet the world did overcome most of their problems. There were many flaws to how our nation’s leader handled the war. We earned knowledge and inventions but lost many hopes and people. The Great War did little good but major harm to the World.
